Privacy & Cookies
Last updated September 15 2026
This Privacy and Cookies Policy explains how The Unhurried Route (“we,” “us,” or “our”), operated by Carly Fries Travels, collects, uses, and shares personal information when you visit theunhurriedroute.com (the “Site”), subscribe to our newsletter, use an embedded travel tool, or contact us.
This policy describes the services currently used on the Site. We will update it before introducing a new analytics, advertising, affiliate, or email service that materially changes how personal information is handled.
1. Who We Are
The Unhurried Route is a travel publication operated by Carly Fries Travels and focused on slow travel, food, coliving, and cultural immersion.
Privacy contact: hello@theunhurriedroute.com
2. Information We Collect
The information collected depends on how you use the Site.
- Information you provide. If you subscribe, we collect your email address and any other information you choose to provide through the signup form. If you contact us, we receive your email address and the contents of your message.
- Hosting and technical information. Our hosting provider may process technical information needed to deliver and secure the Site, such as IP address, browser and device information, operating system, requested pages, referring URL, and the date and time of a request.
- Consent information. Cookiebot records your consent choices and may process technical information necessary to store and document those choices.
- Newsletter engagement information. Kit may process information associated with a subscription and newsletter delivery, such as confirmation status, email delivery, opens, clicks, and unsubscribe activity, depending on the settings and features we use.
- Affiliate and booking information. If you allow marketing technologies and interact with Stay22 tools or monetized travel links, Stay22 and its booking partners may process technical, location, referral, interaction, and booking-attribution information. We do not receive your full payment-card details from a travel booking made on a third-party website.
We do not intentionally request sensitive personal information through the Site. Please do not send health, financial-account, government-identification, or similarly sensitive information by email.
3. How We Use Information
We use personal information to:
- Operate and secure the Site. This includes delivering pages, preventing abuse, troubleshooting, and maintaining site functionality.
- Provide requested communications. We use subscriber information to send confirmation messages and the travel dispatches or other newsletter content described at signup.
- Respond to you. We use information in direct messages to answer questions and handle privacy requests.
- Operate affiliate features. With the required consent where applicable, Stay22 may measure referrals, attribute bookings, and display travel booking options.
- Meet legal and administrative obligations. We may use information to maintain records, enforce applicable terms, protect rights and safety, and comply with lawful requests.
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, we rely on consent for newsletter subscriptions and nonessential marketing technologies; legitimate interests in operating, securing, and improving the Site and responding to inquiries; and compliance with legal obligations where required. You may withdraw consent at any time, but withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
4. Cookies and Similar Technologies
We use Cookiebot to present cookie choices and manage nonessential cookies and similar technologies. The categories shown in the banner may include:
- Necessary. Technologies required to deliver the Site, provide security, or remember your consent choices.
- Preferences. Technologies that remember optional settings or choices, if any are enabled.
- Statistics. Technologies used to measure audience activity, if a statistics service is enabled. We do not currently use a separate audience analytics service.
- Marketing. Technologies used for Stay22 affiliate attribution and related travel offers, and third-party newsletter embed functionality where applicable.
Cookiebot is configured to hold back nonessential technologies until the relevant consent is provided. You can reject nonessential categories or change your choices at any time by selecting Cookie settings in the Site footer. The live Cookie Declaration below lists the cookies and trackers detected on the Site, including their providers, purposes, categories, and durations.
5. Newsletter and Email Communications
We use Kit, formerly ConvertKit, to collect and manage newsletter subscriptions and send email. Subscribing is voluntary. We use a confirmation process so that a subscription must be confirmed before regular newsletter messages are sent. Every newsletter includes an unsubscribe link.
If you unsubscribe, we may retain limited information needed to honor the opt-out, maintain suppression records, resolve disputes, or comply with law. You may also request access, correction, or deletion by contacting us.
6. Affiliate Links and Stay22
The Site currently uses Stay22 maps and affiliate technology. Stay22 may identify or modify eligible travel links and may show booking options when marketing consent has been provided. If you click or book through an eligible link or embedded tool, we may earn a commission at no additional cost to you.
Stay22 and the booking platform you choose operate under their own privacy practices. Affiliate relationships are also disclosed near relevant recommendations or booking tools.
We also share a referral code for Nomadico, a coliving-booking platform, in some coliving articles. If you book a Nomadico property using that code, we may receive a discount on a future stay. This is a referral code shared directly in an article, not an embedded tool or tracking technology, so Nomadico does not receive information about you through the Site and this relationship is not affected by your cookie choices. We will add other affiliate providers to this policy when they are activated on the Site.
7. Service Providers
We use the following providers to operate the Site. Each provider processes information under its own terms and privacy practices:
- Netlify. Hosts and delivers the Site and may process server and technical request information. View Netlify’s privacy policy.
- Cookiebot by Usercentrics. Manages cookie consent choices and provides the Cookie Declaration. View Cookiebot by Usercentrics’s privacy policy.
- Kit. Manages newsletter subscriptions, confirmation, delivery, engagement information, and unsubscribes. View Kit’s privacy policy.
- Stay22. Provides affiliate-link technology, embedded travel maps, referral measurement, and booking attribution. View Stay22’s privacy policy.
- Google Fonts. Provides web fonts and may receive technical request information when font files are requested. View Google Fonts’s privacy policy.
8. How We Share Information
We share personal information with the service providers described above only as needed to operate the Site, provide requested communications, support consent and affiliate functionality, and meet legal obligations. If you follow a link to a booking platform or another third-party website, that provider collects information under its own privacy policy.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights, safety, or security of the Site or others, or as part of a business reorganization or transfer. We do not sell personal information for money. Some privacy laws may define certain affiliate or advertising-related disclosures as a sale or sharing; you can disable nonessential marketing technologies through Cookie settings.
9. Data Retention
We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including providing services, maintaining security and records, honoring opt-outs, resolving disputes, and meeting legal obligations. Newsletter information is generally retained while you remain subscribed and afterward only as needed to honor an unsubscribe or deletion request and maintain appropriate records. Third-party providers apply their own retention periods.
10. International Data Transfers
The Site is delivered through Netlify’s global infrastructure, and our service providers may process information in the United States, Canada, the European Economic Area, and other countries. Privacy protections may differ from those in your country. Where required, providers state that they use recognized safeguards for cross-border transfers, such as approved contractual clauses or applicable data-transfer frameworks.
11. Your Privacy Choices and Rights
Depending on where you live and subject to applicable exceptions, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of your personal information; object to or restrict certain processing; withdraw consent; opt out of certain sales, sharing, or targeted advertising; and appeal a decision concerning a privacy request.
To change cookie choices, select Cookie settings in the Site footer. To stop newsletter emails, use the unsubscribe link in any message. To make another privacy request, email hello@theunhurriedroute.com. We may need to verify your identity before completing a request. You may also have the right to complain to the privacy or data-protection authority where you live.
12. Children’s Privacy
The Site is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed to children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Site, contact us so we can review and delete it as appropriate.
13. Data Security
We and our service providers use reasonable administrative and technical measures intended to protect personal information. No internet transmission or storage system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy when the Site’s services or legal obligations change. We will post the revised policy on this page and update the date at the top. If a change materially affects how we use information for a purpose that requires consent, we will request new consent when required rather than treating continued use of the Site as consent.
15. Contact Us
Questions or privacy requests may be sent to hello@theunhurriedroute.com.
